Ten-day holiday does little to improve isolation rates in São Paulo

The São Paulo city government’s decision to bring forward three holidays and create a week-long holiday in late March to curb the coronavirus spread did not have the desired effect. Isolation rates stood at 44.7 percent between March 28 and April 3, according to the city’s Smart Monitoring System.

On March 28, the day with the highest level of isolation, only half of the population stayed at home. Mayor Bruno Covas’ decision was followed in several cities around São Paulo state, which face the threat of hospital network collapses. More than 500 people have died in São Paulo due to a lack of available intensive care beds.
