Government official fired after alert of record-breaking Amazon deforestation

Lubia Vinhas, coordinator of the Earth Surveillance project within the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe), was dismissed from her position on Monday, as published on today’s issue of the government’s federal register. Among other duties, Ms. Vinhas was responsible for overseeing the live monitoring of deforestation activity in the Amazon rainforest, using satellite imagery. Her firing comes a couple of days after Inpe’s latest report revealed that deforestation figures in the Amazon grew for the 14th straight month in June, making 2020 on par to record Brazil’s worst deforestation rates since 2008.
