São Paulo Governor João Doria announced that the agricultural regions of Marília and Ribeirão Preto will be placed on the highest Covid-19 alert level. The decision means that six of the state’s 25 microregions are now in the so-called “red-alert phase” of São Paulo’s reopening plan, meaning that only essential businesses are allowed to open in these areas.

Four other regions, including Greater São Paulo, returned to the “orange phase.” Non-essential businesses may remain open until 8 pm, at 40 percent capacity. Mr. Doria implemented a state-wide curfew between 11 pm and 5 am, beginning this evening.

Nine in ten residents of Brazil’s most populous state are now in regions under a red or orange alert.
