Researchers from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico announced that they are investigating four possible infections by a new variant of the coronavirus in the country. Local health authorities say that the cases are not related to the South African variant, which has been spotted across the Gulf of Mexico in Cuba.

Only one of the four patients being monitored had contact with someone who traveled recently, raising fears of community transmission.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), infections by new variants first identified in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the Brazilian Amazon have been detected in 14 countries across the Americas.
