Rio de Janeiro cancels world-famous New Year’s Eve celebrations

The city of Rio de Janeiro has decided to cancel its iconic New Year celebration as a result of rising Covid-19 cases. The breathtaking New Year’s fireworks show on Copacabana beach is one of Brazil’s most popular events, regularly attracting millions of revelers.

With case numbers rising and the latest report from city officials showing that all municipal ICU beds for Covid-19 patients are currently occupied, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Marcelo Crivella decided to cancel all official celebrations.
