This morning, the Federal Police launched Operation Personale, which aims to investigate suspects of overpricing contracts for the purchase of masks by the Tocantins state government. Officers carried out search warrants and served subpoenas at suppliers’ headquarters and the state health department.

Per news website G1, the Tocantins Health Department purchased 12,000 masks for BRL 420,000, at a unit cost of BRL 35. Similar contracts show purchases of masks at unit prices varying between BRL 1.93 and BRL 3.64.

Tocantins is not the only state undergoing probes involving Covid-19-related corruption accusations. Similar investigations are in progress in Pernambuco, the Federal District, Santa Catarina, Amapá, and Rio de Janeiro — where Governor Wilson Witzel is also under investigation.
