Brazil’s capital city Brasília could have more 40,000 people out of work by Friday, according to estimates by the local bar and restaurant association. The number was released to pressure the local government into speeding up the reopening of the local economy. There are currently an estimated 333,000 unemployed people in the city.

The association claims that a third month without revenue would devastate bars and restaurants, with many of them forced to permanently close. Since the beginning of the pandemic, approximately 10,000 jobs have been lost in the sector. As of June 1, Brasília recorded 10,510 infections and 171 deaths.

The city was one of the early Covid-19 hot spots in Brazil, but it managed to curb the spread of the virus thanks to high rates of compliance with social isolation measures.
