Government extends military enlistment deadline

President Jair Bolsonaro authorized an extension of the deadline for compulsory military enlistment in Brazil until September 30. With that, Brazilians who turn 18 in 2020 will have three additional months to enlist.

As shown by The Brazilian Report, this decision comes as the military plays an increasingly important role in Mr. Bolsonaro’s administration. Acting Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello — the third person to occupy the position since the beginning of the pandemic — is an Army general.
