On Workers’ Day (May 1), cities along the coast of São Paulo saw massive traffic jams created by tourists who saw the three-day weekend as an opportunity for tourism. Fearing a similar phenomenon this time around — which would completely defeat the purpose of creating a six-day weekend — a state court ordered São Paulo Governor João Doria to deploy roadblocks to prevent the influx of tourists to five municipalities along the south coast of the state, following a request from the cities’ mayors.

The judge said that the principle of protecting human life trumps the constitutional right to free movement.
