Interim Health Minister appoints 9 military officers

Over the weekend, the military officers in Jair Bolsonaro’s cabinet reportedly said they are “100 percent against” having a fellow member of the Armed Forces confirmed as Brazil’s new Health Minister. In the meantime, however, the job has been filled on an interim basis by Army General Eduardo Pazuello. Were he to be made the permanent minister, the Armed Forces fear that such an influential position during a pandemic could tarnish the reputation of the corporation.

But while the military is against having a member of the Armed Forces as the face of the Covid-19 fight, it has certainly placed players in key positions within the Health Ministry. Today’s Federal Register brings nine new Health Ministry appointments of members of the Armed Forces’ top brass — in areas ranging from accountancy and budget planning to the finances of the National Health Fund.
