Brazilian coast: sun, sea, sand … and coronavirus

The Brazilian population is mainly concentrated in municipalities that are close to the coast, with less than 6 percent of cities around the country being home to more than 120 million people. As a result, Covid-19 has also been overwhelmingly more present along Brazil’s coast. A survey carried out by The Brazilian Report shows that 62 percent of beachfront municipalities have recorded at least one Covid-19 infection so far.

In the state of São Paulo, only one out of 15 coastal cities remains free of the coronavirus. In Rio de Janeiro, 100 percent of them have been affected by the pandemic. The map below illustrates the presence of Covid-19 along the country’s coastline.
