Right-wing motorcade targets São Paulo governor, calls for military intervention

Right-wing protesters staged a motorcade in São Paulo against social isolation measures implemented by Governor João Dória — who extended the quarantine until at least May 10. Demonstrators also targeted House Speaker Rodrigo Maia, whom President Jair Bolsonaro accused of conspiring against the government — and some even called for a military intervention, which is a dog-whistle term for coup d’état.

Other Brazilian state capitals have registered pro-Bolsonaro demonstrations, including Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte. In Rio de Janeiro, the main target was Governor Wilson Witzel, a former ally of the president who turned into a foe and disagreed with the president’s handling of the pandemic.

More anti-quarantine protests are scheduled for this Sunday.
