According to São Paulo Governor João Doria, the state recorded on Tuesday 745 new Covid-19 infections and 30 deaths.
The governor also announced the manufacture of 320,000 new protective masks by prisoners and new rules for reporting crimes—non-violent offenses such as white-collar crimes can be reported online. Only violent crimes must be reported in person.
Mr. Doria also said he is discussing with private energy companies to waive power bills on poor households during the pandemic—and to prevent power cuts until July 30 this year.
Asked about a possible lockdown to contain the number of infections, the governor of São Paulo explained that the measure is not applicable at this time because it would affect the entire country. “If we stop São Paulo, we will paralyze Brazil as a whole, since we account for almost 40 percent of the national economy,” said Mr. Doria. He also ruled out a curfew in the coming days. “I do not say that this moment will not come, but there is still no need for that [now],” said.
