Brazil’s Supreme Court has taken BRL 1.6 billion from the so-called “Car Wash fund” to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. These resources were gathered by Brazilian authorities throughout the Operation Car Wash corruption investigation. The decision came in response to a request made by the federal government, Congress, and Prosecutor General.
The Supreme Court endorsement was needed because a judicial agreement signed last year authorized the transfer of BRL 2.6 billion of this fund to education initiatives.
The Economy Ministry already sent BRL 5 billion to the Health Ministry to reinforce the fight against the virus.
