For many women, “recovery” of Brazilian labor market has been a mirage

After a year and a half of the pandemic, the Brazilian job market began to show improvements. From a record unemployment rate of 14.9 percent in the first quarter of 2021, the rate in the country dropped to 11.1 percent in Q4 of last year, hitting its lowest level since 2019. However, not all Brazilian workers felt the benefits. In fact, a large share of women did not notice any improvement at all. 

Why it matters. Even though women account for up to 52 percent of the population, as per the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), data continues to show that gender inequality in the labor market remains high in the country remains, both in terms of women’s access to jobs and in terms of wages, for whom they tend to be lower.
